Season’s largest cruise ship yet lands

Thousands of cruise ship passengers entered Dunedin yesterday as the season’s largest vessel yet came into port.

Ovation of the Seas arrived at the Port Chalmers wharf in Beach St yesterday about noon. It travelled from Fiordland and set sail for Lyttelton last night.

Port Otago chief executive Kevin Winders said more than 3000 passengers would have come in on the ship yesterday.

Although total passenger numbers did not come through until the ship had been processed, cruisers were generally booked at about 85% of total capacity.

Some rooms had to be set aside for those with Covid-19 and not every room would be booked.

The vessel has a total capacity for 4180 passengers and 1300 crew.

Last week, the arrival of Celebrity Eclipse disrupted local public transport systems as cruise ship passengers opted for cheap funded buses as opposed to designated shuttles.

Mr Winders said he was not aware of any further problems caused by the influx of passengers on cruise ships.

Discussions about the return of a train to pick up cruise passengers were ongoing, he said.

Another large cruise ship, Majestic Princess, is expected to arrive tomorrow with a total capacity of 3560.
