A rose never goes out of fashion, but they do go out of season.

Fortunately for those attending the 73rd annual Otago Rose Society show, there were plenty in season.

The show was held on Saturday at St Peter’s Anglican Church in Hillside Rd.

Society president Dave Cannan admitted it was an old-fashioned type of event but the show still pulled the crowds.

There were 172 entries, the most in recent memory, Mr Cannan said.

"We’ve got a hard core of people who exhibit and support the show and the public are really good. They come along and the folks are sort of old-fashioned in many ways."

In fact, the show had attracted the biggest crowd in years and was the most successful in a long time, he said.

When it came to exhibiting roses, getting to share them with the public was his favourite part.

"Getting the public to come along and see that something which has been going around for 75 years still has an appeal to people."

The calibre of entries had been "very good", he said.

The society was celebrating its 75th anniversary.

November and early December are the peak times for exhibiting roses, but last week’s high winds had affected some of the entries.

Roses and plants were sold at the show and profits from those went directly back into the society.
