Now, they can explore the airways, as well. For the first time, Otago will have an Air Scouts Corp, which will be based at the Fairfield scout den.
Fairfield Air Scouts leader Peter Trevathan said the inspiration for establishing an air scout group came from his passion for scouts and aviation.
"I like my little challenges. There was a niche for an air scout group, and after a lot of hard work, Otago will now have one."
Scouts would be given skills in meteorology, navigation, air traffic control and preparation for flying when they grow older.
"Once we get established, we will visit the Taieri Airfield, the Dunedin International Airport control tower, the Wanaka museum and Wigram," he said.
Anyone aged 10 to 15 was welcome, Mr Trevathan said.
