MetService forecaster Jon Tunster said a blocking high, situated to the southeast of the South Island had led to the same weather being repeated, day after day.
The fog and low cloud were affecting much of the east coast of New Zealand, with the Otago Peninsula and attractions such as Larnach Castle and the Royal Albatross Colony at Taiaroa Head being shrouded in mist, while inland the cloud burned off during the day - resulting in temperatures about 10degC warmer.
A southerly is expected to hit the region this afternoon, but there is a possibility of good weather early next week with the arrival of an anticyclone.
