Mr McCowan (25), a PhD student in the anatomy and structural biology department, won the best overall picture award.
He said he enjoyed taking photographs during his field work.
The winning photo was taken as he was re-seeding young paua inside adult paua shells in the Marlborough Sounds.
About 69 photographs depicting scenes as varied as sunsets to a bicuspid vein in a facial valve were entered in the competition.
