The classrooms may have emptied, but memories of the past filled Tomahawk School on Saturday.

An open day for former staff and pupils attracted about 70 people to take one last look at the buildings and grounds of the school that educated the children of Ocean Grove for 141 years.

Tomahawk School started the year with no pupils, and applied to the Minister of Education for permission to close.

That will happen officially on April 1.

Board of Trustees chairwoman Audrey Harbrow said the idea of the event was to get people together to "say goodbye to the school".

Many former pupils had turned up, as well as six former principals of the primary school.

Wendy Hawes was a teacher at the school from 1987 to 2001, and said at the time "the school was the community".

"Everything the school did, the community got involved in, too."

She had come from Westport for the event, and fondly remembered the children who passed through the school.

"That's what brought me back."

Despite there having been talk of the closure for some time, she was sad to hear it had happened.

Murals on the school she had organised would be saved, and removed to a nearby park.
