School pupil at centre of Elmgrove knife incident

The person at the centre of a knife incident which led to a Mosgiel primary school being locked down earlier this week is a pupil at the school, the Ministry of Education has confirmed.

Police were called to Elmgrove School shortly after 9am, after reports of knife being brandished on the school's grounds.

Neither the school nor police were forthcoming with details of the incident or what led to it, but the ministry confirmed yesterday the person at the centre of it was a school-age child from Elmgrove.

''We are aware that an incident had occurred ... at Elmgrove School involving a student,'' Ministry of Education deputy secretary of sector enablement and support Katrina Casey said.

''The student involved is a current student.

''We understand the school has dealt with the incident, including disciplinary action with the student involved.

''The board of trustees will manage this process and we will provide further support if it is required.''

Principal Chris McKinlay confirmed the ministry's version of events.

''It's a matter that has got to go the board,'' he said.

''Until it's been dealt with that way, I can't really comment.''

Classrooms at the school were locked as the incident took place on Monday.

Police said, at the time, it was ''resolved peacefully'' without anyone arrested.
