More than 100 stallholders had signed up for the first Stadium Market, market manager Hazel Murtagh said.
The "long overdue" market inside the stadium would have stallholders from as far away as Christchurch selling fresh produce, hot food, clothes, crafts and other curios.
The Rotary Club of Dunedin Central and Dunedin Venues Management Ltd joint-venture was ideal for people who missed the Otago Farmers Market on Saturdays, she said.
The indoor event was free, but parking would be a gold-coin donation to Rotary.
During future markets, games of school sport would be played to show shoppers the versatility of the stadium, Ms Murtagh said.
One stall at each market would be free of charge for a school or charity group to fundraise.
Columba College in Dunedin had been given the first fundraising spot.
Pupil Caitlin Doran-Taylor (16) said a group of pupils was fundraising for a trip to Vietnam, to paint and repair an orphanage, next July.
They would be selling seedlings they had grown, home baking and waffles, she said.
Fellow pupil Kim Schultz (15) said about 40 year 11 and 12 pupils would go on the World Challenge volunteering expedition.
Fundraising for the expedition had gone well so far, she said.
The market is open from 10am until 2pm.
