Community concerns that a school pedestrian crossing was an ''accident waiting to happen'' have prompted the Dunedin City Council to investigate.

Brockville School principal Chris Cumberland said he had stood on the pedestrian crossing near the Brockville Rd school in a bright orange coat and watched as a car drove straight through the crossing.

Safety concerns over motorists' behaviour near the crossing have prompted notices in the school newsletter, police patrols, and a call to the council.

A young boy was hit by a car near the school earlier this year, and while he was uninjured, the crossing remained an ''accident waiting to happen'', Mr Cumberland said.

While there were signs warning motorists there were school children about, he could not understand why the council had declined a request for swinging barrier arms at the site.

Instead, the school had been advised to consider other options, such as configuring a car park at its own cost, or moving the crossing.

The school was also prevented from using ''stop'' signs made by a board member, or putting cones out to stop traffic.

''All I want is for kids in our community to be safe when they cross the road,'' he said.

That sentiment was shared by concerned parent Paul Mielnik, who contacted the Otago Daily Times about the matter yesterday. He had also contacted the council and police.

Mr Mielnik was pleased the council had agreed to work with other road safety partners to find an appropriate solution.

Council transportation engineer Diana Munster said council staff and police would visit the site next week to see what was happening and decide on the best course of action to make the road safer for children and other users.
