Lazarus the cat has a new home.
The public gave more than $2200 to pay the vet bill after the long-haired ginger cat was hit by a car in South Dunedin last month.
SPCA Otago business development manager Kirsty Thomson said as the owner of the injured cat had not initially come forward, the charity named the cat Lazarus. He was adopted by a family living near Larnach Castle.
‘‘Lazarus lives on a large block away from busy streets and will be completely loved and spoiled,'' Ms Thomson said.
Lazarus' previous owner, Eddie Genet, of Caversham, contacted the shelter after hearing his cat had featured in the Otago Daily Times, Ms Thomson said.
He was pleased his cat - Pixie-Ninja - had found a happy home. The Otago Peninsula was a safer place to roam than the busy streets of South Dunedin, Mr Genet said.
‘‘It's cool he has got a good place to stay.''
