Boulder  may have a missing leg, but he has not let it ruin his zest for life.

The tabby kitten, believed to be between 5 and 6 months old, was found three weeks ago in the Moeraki area with a gunshot wound.

His leg had to be amputated, to prevent infection.

Animal Rescue Network founder Ana Andrianova said he was named after Moeraki's famous landmarks.

``He is strong, a survivor. He is really super cute, and super friendly.''

Boulder is one of hundreds of cats helped by the Dunedin charity every month.

With high numbers of pregnant cats and ``teenage'' kittens still coming in as winter approaches, the charity is reliant on donations of cat food and financial contributions.

``We don't have any funding; it's all basically provided by people who love our work.''

Ms Andrianova said she had hoped numbers would ``flow down'' at this time of year, but that had not happened.

For February alone, veterinary bills exceeded $21,000, and in April they were about $19,000.

She expected the charity would be busy from now until September.

The charity rehomed cats and kittens, as well as helping homeowners care for strays on their properties. It also paid the cost of desexing and vaccination.

At any given time the network - which had a strong base of foster households - was dealing with 200 or 250 cats and kittens.

Since the network began in 2015 it had helped rehome more than 3000 cats.

The hardest animals to adopt were unsocialised cats and kittens which had had little contact with people. But they became more friendly, Ms Andrianova said.

For instance, Boulder was growing into a happy pet, fostered temporarily by a Dunedin family.

``We are looking for the perfect home for him, because he has been through so much,'' Ms Andrianova said.
