Road spikes stop pursuit

It took several sets of road spikes to halt a driver fleeing police at speeds of up to 160kmh around the Taieri early on Saturday, police say.

''The vehicle drove for a period of the pursuit on a rim and a flat tyre'', Sergeant Dave Scott of Dunedin, said. Police started pursuing the Toyota Corolla at 12.26am in Centre Rd, Momona.

They abandoned the pursuit as the car passed through Outram, but resumed the chase, following it around North Taieri, Wingatui and Mosgiel. The car was spiked ''on several occasions'' and eventually stopped at 1.05am in Titri Pl, Mosgiel.

The 32-year-old Mosgiel man driving the car was arrested and charged with reckless driving, driving while forbidden, with an excess breath-alcohol level and aggravated failing to stop. He will appear in the Dunedin District Court on Friday.

Sgt Scott said the pursuit was another example of someone blatantly risking not only his own life but that of his 22-year-old passenger, and everyone else driving on the road.
