The work began on Wednesday and will continue today, NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) maintenance contract manager, coastal Otago, Nicholas Rodger said yesterday.
``It's asphalt resurfacing, involving milling - removal of the existing surfacing layer - and the application of a new asphalt surface,'' Mr Rodger said.
The work was expected to involve two days of milling and a day of paving today.
The new road markings were expected to be back in place this weekend.
The work was being carried out by Downer, on behalf of NZTA, under the Coastal Otago State Highway Network Outcomes Contract (maintenance contract), Mr Rodger said.
The work would carry through to just past Howe Street on SH1 Southbound, although NZTA would be renewing more asphalt through the city this season, Mr Rodger said.
