Travel restrictions have been a hindrance to progress on narrowing down options for a hotel development at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.

Project leaders had been talking to parties that expressed interest in building a hotel and car park at the North Dunedin site, but Covid-19 travel restrictions in Auckland and Waikato had hampered due diligence and site visits, Dunedin Stadium Property Ltd director Keith Cooper said.

Some parties had asked more questions than others and the project team was starting to whittle down a list of the more likely candidates, he said.

Discussions have been taking place since the end of August.

The proposal to build a hotel and nearby multilevel car park was promoted by Dunedin Stadium Property Ltd, which owns the stadium and is part of the Dunedin City Holdings Ltd stable of companies owned by the Dunedin City Council.

Possible commercial partners were invited to make their pitch to help add a hotel and car park to the stadium precinct, as well as a sports bar overlooking the ground, office space and a revamped front entrance to the stadium.
