St Clair Surf Club lifeguards training for the opening of the season today at St Clair Beach. Lifeguards will patrol St Clair, St Kilda, Brighton and Kaka Point beaches from today and Warrington Beach from November 23.

Patrols will be at Brighton, St Clair and St Kilda until March 16 next year and at Warrington and Kaka Point until March 2. Volunteer lifeguards will patrol on Saturdays and Sundays during the season between noon and 5pm. On Sundays, lifeguards at Kaka Point will patrol between 11am and 4pm.

Paid regional lifeguards will be at the five beaches on weekdays during the school holidays from December 18 until January 28, between 11am and 7pm. Last season, 266 trained volunteer lifeguards spent over 7056 hours on the five beaches in Dunedin and South Otago and 17 people were rescued from life-threatening situations.
