Renowned academic Peter Matheson dies

Renowned academic and respected church leader Peter Matheson has died.

A Scottish historian and theologian, the Rev Dr Peter Matheson lived in his native land and then Australia, before he and his family moved to New Zealand in 1981.

Settling in Dunedin, Dr Matheson pursued an academic career at the University of Otago, as well as becoming closely engaged in peace and justice activism. He retired as Emeritus Professor of Knox Theological College.

A prolific writer, Dr Matheson was a regular contributor to the Otago Daily Times Letters and Opinion pages, and last year wrote the annual contributed Good Friday editorial from a local theologian.

Dr Matheson died on Monday, aged 86. His funeral will be held at Knox Church on Tuesday.
