It was a wild weekend for hunters in Otago.
Fifty-nine teams scoured the region for trophy-worthy beasts as part of the annual Mornington Tavern Boar and Stag Hunt.
It is the region's largest annual hunting competition and has been running for almost a decade.
Yesterday's weigh-in at the Dunedin tavern brought about 230 hunters from far and wide together to assess their spoils and compare carcasses.
Jamie Tisdall's 133.5kg red stag and Kayden Selwood's 72.4kg boar were the heaviest.
Other main winners included Matt O'Connell, Rusty Reid and Willie Jones.
In total, 88 animals were weighed and $3000 worth of prizes were awarded.
Organisers were thrilled with the record number of teams this year.
Hunters spoken to by the Otago Daily Times said the weekend weather was good and there were plenty of animals around, although some were smaller than in previous years.
None of the competitors wanted to disclose their preferred spots, simply stating they had luck ''in the area''.
Jim Crawford, of Lawrence, said the camaraderie among hunters was what attracted him to participate in the event year after year.
Hunters competed from 7am on Friday until 3pm yesterday.
