A car driver fled the scene after running a red light and hitting another car in Dunedin on Saturday.
The accident happened about noon opposite the Dunedin Chinese Garden.
Southern District Command Centre spokesman Senior Sergeant Darryl Lennane confirmed no one was injured and believed the offending driver ''took off''.
A witness, who did not want to be named, said he stopped at a red light at the intersection of State Highway 1 and Queens Gardens when a vehicle continued through and swerved, ''narrowly missing'' group of tourists.
It then hit another vehicle turning right on to the one way street.
The witness said the driver was sounding the horn while approaching the tourists and might not have realised the light was red.
