Recidivist occupier escapes further charges

A 49-year-old man has escaped further charges arising from his actions on Friday when he ignored police and returned to the Occupy Dunedin site in the Octagon when instructed not to.

The man was part of the Occupy Dunedin group, part of a global movement against corporate greed, which had a brief reprise in solidarity with its Auckland counterparts.

The group officially packed up and left on Tuesday, but the man pitched his tent on the Octagon grass on Friday afternoon. He was arrested, taken into custody and charged with wilful damage about 3.30pm.

Police dismantled the tent and removed it after the man refused to take it down.

He was was released on bail, with one of the conditions being that he did not return to the Octagon.

However, he left the Dunedin Central Police Station and went directly back to the Octagon, where he was arrested again for breach of bail and placed in police cells.

Senior Sergeant Bruce Ross said the man appeared before lustices of the peace in the Dunedin District Court on Saturday morning. He was warned for breach of bail and released.

Snr Sgt Ross would not release the man's name.
