In an Otago Daily Times report last month, costs for roof repairs on parts of the Dunedin City Council-owned museum were put at more than $500,000.
In a statement this week, council property services group manager David Bainbridge indicated an $850,000 repair bill.
The temporary scaffolding roof would be used to protect the Hudson Gallery while the roof cladding was replaced, he said.
The museum would remain open and other galleries were not affected.
The project was expected to take about five months.
