Rare matched notes top face value

Seldom do a couple of $10 notes add up to more than $20.

But yesterday, a rare pair of Reserve Bank of New Zealand $10 notes with identical serial numbers went under the hammer at Hayward's Auction House in Dunedin and fetched $500.

The notes, with serial number A8 438063, were signed by Neal Fleming, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand chief cashier from 1956-67.

Auctioneer Kevin Hayward declined to say who bought the bills, but said they were now in the hands of a Dunedin collector, after strong bidding from as far away as Auckland.

Mr Hayward said he had no idea of the value of the notes, but was not surprised when they drew a bid of $500.

Numismatic Society of Auckland president and former Dunedin resident Jim Duncan said the notes were likely to be the result of a misprint caused by fluff and dust jamming the little wheels of the machine that printed the serial numbers on the notes.
