A life of clean living is credited with Kathleen Rapley reaching her 100th birthday yesterday.

According to her daughter, Margaret Inwood, she had never smoked or drank. She also had never driven a car or ridden a bike.

However, she had gone for a joyride with aviator and inventor Richard Pearse.

Mrs Rapley (nee Wickliffe) celebrated the special day with friends, family and staff at Birchleigh Rest Home in Mosgiel.

Guests were entertained by a pianist, as well as some of her grandchildren playing various instruments.

Five generations of her family had travelled from Australia and around New Zealand to be with her.

It was the first time in 10 years the family had all been together.

"It's a really special time for us," Mrs Inwood, of Dunedin, said.

Mrs Rapley was born in Southbridge, Canterbury.

She married Percy Rapley in 1928 and the couple had four children.

The family moved to Christchurch, where Mrs Rapley lived until last year, when she moved to the rest-home to be closer to family.
