Puppet show based on tale ‘to get back to happiness’

A pair of puppeteers have brought their show based on a book about a young girl dealing with the trauma of losing her father in the 2019 Christchurch terror attack to Dunedin.

Birdlife Productions puppeteers Roger and Bridget Sanders are performing their show, based on children’s book Aya and the Butterfly by Dr Maysoon Salama, today and tomorrow at 11am to finish their four-show residency at the Clarkson Studio in the Regent Theatre.

Mr Sanders said Dr Salama wrote the book to help her granddaughter Aya to grieve her father’s loss but also to help other children recover from traumatic events.

He said the show was about a little girl who was very sad and was re-entering the world with the love of her family and the processes that happened in her garden.

"We have a metamorphosis process that takes place with the butterfly which is a metaphor for the processes that she goes through to get back to happiness."

The characters in the show and the book are Aya, her grandfather, her mother and the creatures from their garden.

Mr Sanders said he and Ms Sanders discovered the book in a kindergarten while performing a show there.

They thought it was wonderful and contacted Dr Salama to write a play based on it and she loved the idea.

Mr Sanders had been a puppeteer for about eight years and Ms Sanders came from visual arts background and designed the rod puppets used in the show.
