But not the eight-strong all-boy group from St Clair School, which took to the stage during the weekend for the Jump Jam Extravaganza in Dunedin.
The group strode confidently on to the stage and struck a pose with attitude, as if just waiting for the wind machine.
Instead, the booming countdown of the Thunderbirds theme kicked in and, with a "Thunderbirds are go", they were strutting about the stage, much to the delight of the 300-strong crowd of clapping and whooping parents and children.
The event, which is in its third year, was organised by teacher Craig Kemp, of Grants Braes School in Dunedin.
It was held at Tahuna Normal Intermediate School hall on Saturday afternoon.
About 100 pupils in nine teams, from six schools from Dunedin and Milton, entered this year's event.
Mr Kemp said the event aimed to promote participation and an active lifestyle.
It also sought to build confidence in pupils aged between 5 and 13.
"It's just confidence building . . . Getting kids up on stage who don't normally do this sort of thing. They love it," Mr Kemp said.
Last year was the first time an all-boys team took part.
However, more boys seemed willing to get involved as it "became more cool", he said.
"They see other boys up there so it's not seen to be too uncool."
Joshua Templer (10), of St Clair, was one of those taking part, and said it was "really cool".
Joshua practised for almost three weeks before Saturday's show.
He was not embarrassed or scared to get on stage wearing his colourful leggings.
"Nah. It's loads of fun. They are styley."
