They went on sale two weeks ago and two of the three nights sold out within two days, administration manager Andrea Ford said.
Stars on Stage co-ordinator and Elmgrove School teacher Jenny Ryalls came up with the idea for the event, which was first held in 2002, when she and another teacher wanted to give primary school children the opportunity to entertain on a big stage.
"Two teachers thought it would be a really good idea for kids to get on a stage and perform.
"It's an opportunity for all children to perform, not just those that have dance lessons. It's about participation, having fun and making good memories."
Twenty-one Otago schools have already participated in the first two nights of the event and another 10 will perform tonight, the final night, she said.
Pupils in last night's show used dance, drama, visual arts and music to give spectacular performances of everything from an "Intergalactic Adventure" to a modern-day rendition of Romeo and Juliet.
Mrs Ryalls said the event operated as a trust and, despite its popularity, barely broke even.
Tickets were $15 for adults and $8 for children, but the hire of the theatre at a reduced rate, funding of $200 to each of the 31 schools involved for costumes or props, and bus hire to get them to rehearsals, meant there was little chance of making a profit.
However, it was important to keep the event affordable for families and the children "just love it".
The theatre seated about 1800, but each night about 600 of them would be taken up by the children so they could watch the rest of the show, Mrs Ryalls said.
