Pupils relish chance to soak principal

The last day of school means leaving the principal soaking wet for pupils at a Dunedin school.

St Leonards School had their annual Splash and Dash yesterday which for principal Sarah Thompson meant getting attacked with water guns by the pupils, their parents and alumni.

Ms Thompson said the end-of-the-year event had become a tradition on the school’s calendar and all of the pupils got excited about it from day one.

"They look forward to it since the first day of the school year. We always ask what are you excited about and it’s usually the splash and dash at the end of the year."

She survived the attack but lost a contact lens in the process. Luckily it was found afterwards and her eyesight was restored.

For the pupils it would be the last thing they do at school for the year and on a hot day like yesterday, it made for the perfect send-off.

MetService meteorologist Alec Holden said it was one of the hottest days of this summer at 29°C and Dunedin was one of the hottest places in the South Island.

Alexandra recorded a maximum temperature of 30°C and Twizel got up to 32°C.

Year 6 pupils Macy Hilton, 11, and Levi Harris, 10, took part in the event for the last time.

"I started here at year 1 and I’ve done it every year since that and it’s been really fun.

"This is my last year of doing it so I really enjoyed it," Levi said.

He said the sunny day made the day much better. It was not as good last year when it rained.

Macy said she loved the water fights and getting soaked.

"The water fights are always fun. You get to get everyone wet. You get to splash people and soak them; it’s fun."

Next year Levi will start year 7 at John McGlashan College while Macy is going to Trinity Catholic College.
