They may be only 5 years old, but already, the business acumen of the new entrants at College Street School has generated awards in the New Zealand Primary Enterprise Programme (Prep) competition.

The competition is similar to the Young Enterprise Scheme run in secondary schools, in which pupils create a hypothetical company with directors and employees, generate a profitable product, make it, market it and sell it.

College Street School's new entrants established a movie theatre in Room 1 and filmed their own versions of Where The Wild Things Are and The Little Moa to screen in it.

New entrants' teacher Katrina Munro said the class put several entries into the competition from their business idea and won three major awards.

Where The Wild Things Are won the Most Appealing Marketing or Advertising Award.

The pupils created a boat for the main character (Max) to ride around the school in, while other pupils dressed as monsters waved flags detailing the time and place the movie would be screened.

Two photographs of scenes from The Little Moa won first equal in the Best Prep Photo Award.

Mrs Munro was delighted with the success.

"I think it's pretty impressive that a school in Dunedin with new entrant children is able to take out a big award like this. We were competing against kids from year one to eight across the country.

"The kids have loved it. They've enjoyed it and they are very proud of themselves."

Principal Gary Tenbeth said College Street School was the only school in Dunedin to participate in Prep.

It was a lot of work for the staff at the school but it embodied everything the school wanted for its pupils, he said.
