A community coastal care group is being formed to discuss remedial work at Te Rauone beach, Harington Point, near Dunedin.
There has been significant erosion on the beach for many years, particularly at the northern end closest to Harington Point, and at the southern boundary erosion was outflanking protection works and eating away at Dunedin City Council reserve land.
Port Otago had proposed a renourishment project, putting sand from its dredging at the northern end of the beach and constructing a rock groyne.
Chief executive Geoff Plunket said Port Otago would develop the plans to resource consent stage, but to progress there had to be strong support from the community and city and regional councils.
Last year, the community was concerned at a lack of action.
Representative Hoani Langsbury yesterday said it was "looking very promising".
The community was developing a coastal care group to work with those involved on the remedial action once the "nuts and bolts" of the plan was developed.
The group's membership would include representatives from the community's crib association, landowners and Maori landowners.
