Problem with heater prompts hall of residence evacuation

Residents at the Caroline Freeman College hall of residence in Dunedin received a rude awakening this morning after fears of a fire in the residence.

A crew from Willowbank Fire Station was called about 8am after reports of a strong burning smell.

Senior Station Officer Justin Wafer said when the fire service arrived, college students had been evacuated into the carpark of the complex.

The crew investigated and traced the problem back to an overheated heater panel.
