Stars on Stage co-ordinator and Elmgrove School teacher Jenny Ryalls came up with the idea for the event, which was first held in 2002, when she and another teacher decided to give primary-school children the opportunity to entertain on a big stage.
To date, the show has been held over three nights, but due to public demand for tickets, Mrs Ryalls said organisers were already planning to run it over four nights in the future.
Tickets for the show went on sale two weeks ago and sold fast.
"There are very few school events in Dunedin that can sell out the Regent Theatre for three nights in a row. Every night there have been people queuing up for spare tickets to the show.
"It's just wonderful. Stars on Stage was something that started off quite small - we didn't know how it was going to turn out. It just gets bigger and bigger and the performances get more professional every year.
"I never imagined that two teachers' dreams would ever become such a huge success," she said.
Thirty-one Otago schools participated in the event.
Pupils in last night's show used dance, drama, visual arts and music to give spectacular performances of everything from The Sound of Music to In the Jungle.
