Power was out for a time to residents in some North Dunedin suburbs this evening.

Reports came in of outages in Opoho, Northeast Valley and Pine Hill around 6.10pm.

The traffic lights at the Gardens corner were not operating, and in New World supermarket, customers used lights from their phones to help with shopping.

Power was restored to most places by about 6.30pm.

An Aurora spokesman said the Northeast Valley substation lost power and the cause was being investigated.

It was business as usual at New World Gardens supermarket despite the outage.
