Power cut in Mosgiel (+ video)

About 200 homes remain without power after an explosion cut electricity to part of Mosgiel this afternoon.

A Delta spokesman said power was cut to 500 customers in the Kinmont area of Mosgiel at 1.30pm, and 300 had their power restored by 2pm.

The remaining 200 customers were expected to have power later this evening.

Mosgiel Fire Service senior station officer Martin Jansen said the explosion, which happened before 1pm near the corner of Quarry Rd and Clyde St, caused a live wire to drop over a section and broken bits of line to drop on the road.

People working at the Mosgiel station noticed a power spike before being called out, Mr Jansen said.

Local resident Debbie Elliman said there was a loud bang and a flash before the power went out.

She was not too concerned as there had been a similar issue in the area before.

Delta was on the scene to fix the problem and determine the cause.
