Portobello jetty plans revisited

Plans for a smaller jetty at Portobello, with a wharf and floating pontoon linked by a steel bridge, are to be considered by the Dunedin City Council.

The proposal, which would not be confirmed until next year, would cost $342,000 and be paid for under a cost-sharing arrangement, with the council contributing two-thirds and the community asked to raise the rest.

The council would own the new facility, with estimated annual operating costs of about $10,000, subject to agreement with parties including the Portobello Boat Club.

The details are in a report by council business development team leader Greg Sligo, to be considered at tomorrow's community development committee meeting.

Other elements of the wider project initially envisaged in 2007 would be left to the community to consider in the future, and funding would need to be confirmed during next year's council annual plan hearings in January.

The development would include a smaller reclamation of seabed occupied by the existing wharf, an upgrade of the existing boat club ramp and a roughly formed public boat ramp.

It would not provide new facilities for the Coastguard service, other than leaving a footprint for the Coastguard's planned ramp and building.

The revised proposal followed the presentation of two consultants' reports to the council, which detailed problems with the existing structure and recommended the wharf and pontoon development as the most cost-effective option.

The council withdrew most of its funding for the original project in June.
