A version is being built by Farra Stainless in Dunedin after Dunedin City Council city property manager Kevin Taylor visited Portland last year.
Mr Taylor said the toilet had been designed by an alderman (the equivalent of a city councillor).
Mr Taylor said he checked out the toilets while in Portland and decided they would be "exceedingly appropriate". They would be a good fit for Baldwin St, he said.
The Portland Loo was easy to install on a footpath or other public space.
"You literally throw down a concrete pad, bolt the thing on, and of course install your normal sewerage services, water and so on."
The toilets were easy to maintain with no tiles or electronic doors and few moving parts. They were favoured by police, as "nefarious" activities were less easy to undertake than in fully enclosed toilets.
Mr Taylor said he met users, cleaners, installers, urban designers and the police chief in Portland.
"Everybody loves them."
