Dunedin's Moana Pool is set to get new changing rooms as part of a planned upgrade to the facility.
The upgrades come as part of the Dunedin City Council’s 10-year plan, and are the first stage of a three-year project to improve the swimming facility.
Council parks and recreation group Scott MacLean said the council was upgrading the pool as equipment and areas in the building were due for replacement.
Moana Pool opened on November 14, 1964.
The first floor of the facility will have seven extra changing rooms added — to a total of 16— including three accessible changing rooms with beds and hoists.
Two dry changing rooms for groups, 11 family changing rooms and four poolside showers next to the learners’ pool will be added.
All family and accessible changing rooms and toilets will be gender-neutral.
Other upgrades will include a Just Swim office and strengthening the west wall of the main pool building.
Construction is scheduled to begin early next month.
Mr MacLean said patrons could expect some disruptions to changing facilities, the learners’ pool and the old dive pool while construction was under way.
There would be reduced parking in the rear car park on weekdays.
"The Dunedin City Council will keep pool users updated about pool closures and other disruptions," Mr MacLean said.
A plan to outline the next stages in the project is due to be completed by December.
Last week, the council responded to a public submission on transgender people’s use of the Moana Pool changing facilities.
The council said it had not received any complaints on the subject and aimed to provide an inclusive and safe space for all visitors.
