Almost as soon as it was announced award winning hip-hop artist Kendrick Lamar is performing in Dunedin the question has been asked whether he deserves the mural treatment.
Some users on social media suggested the Dunedin City Council should follow up its more than $8000 mural of Ed Sheeran with one of Lemar, who is playing at Forsyth Barr Stadium on July 17.
Student radio station Radio One asked the question in a tweet saying that Lamar had won 12 Grammys compared to Sheeran's four.
However, not everyone on social media was supportive of the idea, with some on Facebook saying they had never heard of him and another suggesting Pink, who is playing on September 1, was more deserving.
Lamar (30) recently became the first rapper to win the prestigious Pulitzer Prize.
The announcement he is playing Dunedin adds to an ever-increasing list of big ticket artists who have added the city on their tours in recent month, including Robbie Williams, Pink and Stevie Nicks and The Pretenders. It also follows the very successful three-show Ed Sheeran weekend over Easter.
Lamar's most recent album DAMN. was a critical and commercial success topping the charts in the United States and Canada while reaching number two in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. The album peaked at number three on the New Zealand album charts.
DAMN. was nominated for album of the year and won best rap album of the year at the 2018 Grammy Awards.
Lamar along with Top Dawg Entertainment founder Anthony Tiffith, produced and curated the film soundtrack for the Marvel Studios superhero box office smash hit Black Panther.
Lamar is only doing two shows, one in Dunedin and one in Auckland, as a part of his DAMN Tour.
Tickets for both concerts are scheduled to go on sale on April 30.

Confused for a moment there ... Llama in pyjamas: Pets take pics with owners.
Damn. Kendrick Lamar coming to Dunedin ... Thought it was a typo and the stories related until I read them.
Damn ... and I was really excited when I thought there was a show coming to town with a hip-hop dancing L(l)ama. ;-)
If you think about it, it's probably not such a bad idea to paint a mural somewhere in the city of every big name artist that plays in Dunedin. To add to the existing random murals.
It obviously won't encourage artists to play here any more than normal, but that's not the point.
