A car slid on an icy road and plunged into Otago Harbour this morning.

The driver of the car was being treated by St John after leaving the road near the intersection with Doon St at about 8.40am this morning.

Skid marks show the driver appears to have slid across Portobello Road and hit a wooden barrier before ending up in the harbour.

Parts of the barrier were knocked off by the impact.

The road was down to one lane.

A police spokeswoman said officers were called to the crash about 8.50am.

Police, fire and St John attended, however, the car's single occupant was out of the vehicle on arrival.

St John did not need to transport the person and it did not appear injuries were serious.

No cause had been attributed for the crash, the spokeswoman said.
