At least 12 flats were broken into in Dunedin’s student quarter at the weekend.
The raids occurred on Saturday night in Forth St, Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield said.
Nine flats in one block were entered in Forth St and another three flats at a nearby block were also entered and various items were stolen.
A flat in Filleul St, in the central city, was also entered at the weekend, but nothing was taken.
"We have been pretty good in that area in recent times, so that is of concern to us," Snr Sgt Butterfield said.
A handbag, wallet, two pairs of headphones, two iPhone chargers and prescription medication were taken from the first block of flats.
A PlayStation 4, its accessories and headphones were taken from the second block of flats.
The occupants were at home on several occasions.
"The occupants heard noises and came down to investigate," Snr Sgt Butterfield said.
"They found the front door open.
"It’s a significant concern to us that someone is breaking into houses when people are home.
"We are again reminding people to make sure they are locking their flats."
