Drivers needed to take care to ensure they arrived safely at their destination during the coming Christmas and New Year period and the summer months, Southern road policing manager Inspector Tania Baron said.
"With more people out on the roads over the next couple of weeks, drivers need to take care on their journey,'' she said.
"We all have the same goal in mind - to get to our destinations safely to enjoy the festive season with our families - so let's make sure we achieve it.''
Police would be targeting speeding motorists and a reduced tolerance remained in place until the end of January.
"The posted speed limit is a maximum and not a guideline,'' Insp Baron said.
"The roads will be congested at times, so plan your journey ahead and allow for extra time to reach your destination.''
Anyone stopped by police could expect to be breath-tested, so drivers should have a "plan B'' if they had had a few drinks, she said.
The legal limit for drivers aged 20 or older was lowered to 250mcg on December 1 last year.
"Our staff will be out on the roads doing our best to keep everyone safe, but it's not just up to us,'' she said.
"If members of the public drive to the conditions and take note of the key points above, we're more likely to reach our destination safely.
"Let's have a summer period where no-one loses a loved one on our roads.''
