Garden ornaments might seem an odd thing for teenagers to covet, but two Mosgiel girls have allegedly gathered quite a collection from other people's properties over the past few weeks.

Mosgiel police apprehended the two 16-year-olds yesterday and found gnomes, a bird bath, two hedgehogs, two doves, a dog and numerous welcome signs stashed in their homes.

Constable Tim Coudret said the girls stole the items during the night "for fun".

The find was "quite amusing" but only some of the items had been accounted for.

"If anyone is missing garden ornaments, please contact the Mosgiel police," he said.

Ron and Joy Hollamby had seven items taken from their front yard on Sunday night.

She described the thefts as "ridiculous" but was glad her beloved bird bath was safe and sound.

The girls have been charged in relation to the thefts and referred to youth aid.
