Man seriously injured in Dunedin stabbing

Police officers armed with rifles are attending an incident at a boarding house in Graham St, Dunedin, this afternoon where witnesses understand a man has been stabbed.

Several police cars were parked outside the boarding house at the end of the central Dunedin street, which runs off High St. An ambulance left the property just after 4pm.

St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said a 30-year-old man has been transported to Dunedin hospital with serious injuries.

A witness outside the property said he had ''heard there had been a stabbing''.

Another witness said of the victim -- ''All I know is he's been drinking all day,'' and suggested the stabbing was in self-defense.

A police spokeswoman confirmed the man was stabbed. Another man was assisting Dunedin police with their inquiries, she said.
