Police were forced to abandon a chase sparked when a driver sped past a patrol car on Otago Peninsula.
It was one of three incidents where drivers failed to stop in Dunedin at the weekend.
On Saturday at 7am, police officers leaving Rotary Park saw a silver VW Golf speed past them in Highcliff Rd going 100kmh in a 50kmh zone.
Police pulled in behind it and signalled for the driver to stop but the vehicle continued to flee at high speeds.
Officers abandoned the pursuit because of the manner in which the car was being driven.
At 3.55am on Saturday, police attempted to stop a vehicle in Andersons Bay Rd, but the driver fled, leading police on a chase around South Dunedin.
Police abandoned the chase but later found the vehicle in Green Island, where a 25-year-old admitted to being the driver and failing to stop for police.
He was arrested and the vehicle impounded.
He was charged with dangerous driving and failure to stop.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police were called to the intersection of Queens Gardens and Burlington St at 3.15am on Sunday after the driver of a northbound Mazda failed to stop at the red light and crashed into a car.
The Mazda continued without stopping.
