Police abandon alleged 170kmh pursuit

A police pursuit in Dunedin on Saturday was abandoned when the car being chased allegedly reached 170kmh.

A 25-year-old man was later arrested in connection with the incident.

Constable Jonathan Dunn said he recorded the 1999 Holden Commodore car travelling at 67kmh in King Edward St, South Dunedin, about 8.50pm on Saturday but when he turned and indicated to the driver to pull over, the car sped off.

Const Dunn said he pursued the car along Bayview Rd, Forbury Rd, David St, South Rd and on to the Southern Motorway. The pursuit was abandoned after about five or six minutes when the car's speed reached 170kmh.

Road spikes set up on South Rd failed to puncture the vehicle's tyres.

After the pursuit ended, the vehicle turned off the motorway at Green Island and headed towards Brighton.

The vehicle was later traced to its registered owner in Waihola.

The owner was the passenger in the vehicle and a 25-year-old Dunedin man was spoken to by police yesterday, Const Dunn said.

The man will appear in the Dunedin District Court soon on charges of reckless driving and failing to stop.
