The University of Otago has voted to use a points system to allow students to keep track of their overall academic performance.
The university's senate voted to implement a ''grade point average''. Each student's average academic performance will be rated on a nine-point scale.
A report weighing up the pros and cons of using the system was tabled at a university council meeting this week. The report showed all departments supported having a grade point average, with some disagreement over how it should be implemented.
A university spokeswoman said other New Zealand universities used the system.
''It will in the future appear formally on academic transcripts along with percentages grades.''
