National Poetry Day will be celebrated in Dunedin with a new event this year - five local poets will read their work at the historic Port Chalmers Library next week.
The featured poets' work has also been made into posters, which will be displayed in cafes, schools and bookshops throughout the city.
New Zealand Society of Authors spokeswoman Beverly Martens said having the poets' work made into "stunning" posters meant it would reach a wider audience.
"We want everyone to take a moment to appreciate not only poetry for its own sake, but also the breadth and depth of the great poets we have here in Otago," Ms Martens said.
The featured poets are Diane Brown, Paul Chapman, Michael Harlow, Vincent O'Sullivan and Loveday Why, who will read their work in a "best of" selection from the "Monday's Poem" published in the Otago Daily Times this year.
The poets were selected by ODT poetry editor and 2012 Burns Fellow, Emma Neale who will MC the "Poetry Portal" event at Port Chalmers Library on Thursday, July 26, from 6.30pm to 8pm.
The event, including refreshments, is free, but bookings (phone 474-3690 or email library@dcc.govt.nz) are essential.
