Poet well versed in taking it to street

Do you wish you were quick, concise and confident in your speaking?

It can be hard enough stringing together a sentence, but one poet is proving her proficiency with words by writing poems for pedestrians on the streets of Dunedin.

Auckland-born Angelina Stanton said she had been writing street poems since 2013.

As part of the Dunedin Fringe Festival she would be writing poems in the Octagon on any topic for anyone wanting a unique piece of work, she said.

After coming out of a casual job she needed to find something new to keep her busy and in work.

She had friends in the busking scene and always thought it was a great lifestyle, but was not sure what to do.

After some research she decided to give street poetry a shot.

Although it took "a long time" to get set up and running efficiently, she took to the act and performed full time on the streets of Melbourne before returning to Dunedin last year.

She did the act full time for a few years in Melbourne before moving back to New Zealand to be with her family.

She had not taken her typewriter to the street for a while but it did not take long to get back in the flow, she said.

The Otago Daily Times decided to test her poetry prowess with a piece dedicated to the readers.

Ms Stanton took to the challenge and after a few minutes had typed a 13-line poem on yellow A5 card paper titled For The Readers.

She said the typewriter was an "honest" tool that "doesn’t lie".

Each mistake and every word was marked down on the paper permanently, which added both pressure and authenticity to each poem.

It was also the simplest way to get words inked down on paper on the go and was a novelty that attracted passers-by.

She would be in the Octagon again about 4pm today, she said.
