Washington DC-based animation studio plans to bring animated dinosaurs to life in Dunedin.

Emmy-award winning animation company, Pixeldust Studios, has partnered with television production company NHNZ in setting up a small graphics studio in the latter's Dunedin office.

The partnership enables computer graphic designers in Washington DC and Dunedin to work in real time on computer-generated imagery for a yet-to-be-announced television series on dinosaurs.

With the public increasingly wanting computer-generated imagery in their factual television series, the collaboration with Pixeldust Studios would help NHNZ integrate graphics of dinosaurs into their footage, executive vice-president of development and marketing Neil Harraway said.

NHNZ also worked with animation companies Taylormade, of Dunedin, and Weta Digital, of Wellington on other productions, he said.

Pixeldust Studios creative director Ricardo Andrade said the company, which also has studios in Toronto and New York, was pleased to partner with NHNZ and "would use every technological tool in our reach to keep everyone in the project connected".

"With our technology, we can have producers in Berlin, New Zealand and Washington interacting and video conferencing as we all watch animation in real time - being able to see the facial expressions of your producers says more than a page of feedback."

Former NHNZ contractor Karsten Schneider would work for Pixeldust Studios from NHNZ's Dunedin office.

Last week, Pixeldust was nominated for three Emmy awards.
