The first piles for the new Purakaunui community jetty were installed yesterday - two years after the structurally unstable old jetty was dismantled.

Purakaunui Amenities Society member and project co-ordinator Ian Davie said the $13,000 jetty would replace one which had been well used by the community.

"Kids liked to jump off it, it was a good place for fishing and useful for people putting their boats in the water."

Mr Davie said contractors were hired to put the piles in and Purakaunui residents would build the decking.

Although construction was behind schedule, it was hoped the jetty would be completed by August.

"We struck a bit of a snag.

Originally we planned to drive the piles into the sand but the bottom was much more rocky than we anticipated.

We had to dig the holes for the piles and then concrete them in."

Mr Davie said the community raised funds for six months for the project and he was pleased construction had finally begun.
