Balmacewen Intermediate pupil Liam Connolly captured the image of street art on Manse St in the reflection of a puddle and received the most votes from 3000 submitted.
Liam was ''really excited'' to receive the award and had his photograph printed on to a canvas as a prize.
''I had entered a couple of times before and got highly commended. I didn't expect [to win] at all and I was really surprised,'' he said.
The idea for the photo came about when he and his mother, Jonelle Connolly, were visiting a shop nearby.
''I was really excited about all the street art that is around Dunedin. I decided to take the photo because I had my camera on me [at the time].''
Liam said he had pored through ''lots'' of different shots of the reflection looking for the right angle and focus before deciding on the winning shot.
He also won the environmental impact, 14 and under category.
People could submit photos in the 14 and under section or the open section in three different categories: animal, plant or environmental impact.
Liam said he wanted to continue photography at secondary school.
Mrs Connolly said it was great and she was happy for Liam.
''It's a fantastic competition because there's not many [competitions like this] around the country.''
Museum marketing co-ordinator Kate Barron said the competition, now in its 16th year, was getting ''better and better''.
The photography competition exhibition at Otago Museum closes on September 27.
