A drip led Dunedin police to their man.
Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said police were called to Bowler Ave, Mornington, this week following reports of a petrol theft.
The officer at the scene was able to follow petrol splatters to a nearby house, he said.
A 19-year-old man at the address was charged with petrol theft.
Snr Sgt Benn also warned of a spate of car break-ins in the Roslyn, Kaikorai and Mornington area.
A range of items including wallets, cellphones, and small change had been taken from cars that were largely left unlocked.
The thefts had taken place since October 25, and residents were advised to ensure their vehicles were locked and to report any suspicious behaviour to the police.
